Detection Combing

The single most important thing you can do to keep head lice under control is to check your family for head lice every week. If head lice are treated promptly, the chance of clearing them successfully will be greatly increased, and the risk of them spreading to others will be greatly reduced.

We recommend that you make checking for head lice part of a routine, such as preparing for the school week on a Sunday evening. Remember to continue the checks during the school holidays as head lice are prevalent all year round. Don't wait until the school asks you to check; you should always be vigilant.

Detection Combing

This operation will take about 20 minutes and should be done in a good light.

The Lyclear Detector Kit can help you to carry out detection combing properly.

Step 1

Detection combing is much easier to carry out on towel dried hair, so wash or wet the hair and apply a small amount of conditioner or olive oil.

Step 2

Step 2

Detangle the hair with a wide-toothed comb and divide into 4 sections and pin back.

Step 3

Step 3

Starting on one of the lower sections, divide this section in 2 horizontally and pin back the upper section.

Step 4

Step 4a Step 4b

Working on the loose section, place the teeth of the nit comb against the scalp and pass the comb along the hair right to the ends, maintaining contact with the scalp for as long as possible.

Step 5

Step 5a Step 5b

Wipe the comb on a tissue after each stroke and inspect for lice. The magnifying lens included in the Lyclear Detector Kit will help you to confirm whether it's a louse you have found or some other debris.

Step 6

Step 6

Continue working your way around the head in sections until you have either found a live moving louse, or until the whole head has been completed.

Apply an effective treatment ONLY if you have found a live moving louse.

Repeat the detection procedure on all the children in the household, and if a child is found to be infected, make sure you check and treat all affected adults too.

Below are life size drawings of head lice at different stages of their development. You can use the magnifying lens included in the Lyclear Detector Kit to take a closer look at any lice you may find. If you are unsure, stick the object to a piece of sticky tape and take it to your local pharmacist.
